Head Brewer, McLeod's Brewery
Jason is head brewer at McLeod’s Brewery in Waipu, Northland. He has worked for no less than two champion New Zealand breweries.
An expat American hailing from Vermont, Jason started professional life as a classically-trained chef, graduating at the top of his class from NECI (New England Culinary Institute) in Montpelier, Vermont. He enjoyed more than two decades running kitchens around New England and Colorado before moving to Nelson at the top of the South Island in 2009.
A skilled homebrewer, it didn’t take long before Jason started entering local homebrew competitions and winning awards. Not surprisingly, the professional brewing bug bit. He began an internship with Søren Eriksen of 8 Wired Brewing Company in October 2011 during the company’s production tenure at Renaissance Brewing Company. This culminated in Jason being hired as an assistant brewer at Renaissance in May 2012.
In July 2013, Jason joined 8 Wired Brewing Company as assistant brewer. A keen fan of ‘sour’ beers, Jason immediately aided in the procurement of and began managing what is still considered the largest beer barrel-aging program in the Southern Hemisphere. In December 2014, he helped move the entire barrel collection north of Auckland to Warkworth and played a role in the subsequent build of 8 Wired’s new brewery.
He has been head brewer at McLeod’s Brewery since mid-April 2016.
